What is better: to multitask or to master one subjeсt?

Multitasking is a popular concept. It’s common, especially to people who want to be productive in their work. This is also very prevalent in the white-collar environment. People are always finding ways where they can maximize time and hit two birds with one stone.

There’s nothing wrong with being productive, especially when you know that you’re capable of doing more tasks. Multitasking is further influenced by organizations as it’s seen as a desirable trait. But this is not a  contributor to being prolific.

Multitasking may not be as productive as what many people believe.

There are good points in multitasking, but don’t let it be your only criteria for being productive at work. Sometimes, it helps to focus on one subject and master it to be productive.

The Role of Multitasking and Single-tasking in the Work and School Environment

Productivity can happen both at work and in school.

Students also experience multitasking when composing essays, finishing dissertations, and writing papers. Being able to do many assignments in the shortest period of time gives students an upper hand. It makes managing their schedules easier.

It’s not bad to multitask. There are people who respond well to multitasking, and there are others who don’t. More about this differences you can read in this psychology essay.

  • Good multitasking enhances your productivity.
  • Multitasking can boost your motivation and willpower to finish work.
  • It boosts your creativity.
  • You can switch back and forth various tasks with multitasking.
  • You can juggle two or more tasks at the same time,
  • You can finish tasks faster especially when you are beating a deadline.

Single-tasking, meanwhile, lets you concentrate on one task alone. This is good when you’re studying and mastering a subject. Sometimes, the fastest way of studying things is to finish them one step at a time.

  • You can conserve more energy with single-tasking.
  • You are also more productive with single-tasking.
  • Your raise your commitment level when you focus on single-tasking.
  • You can ward off distractions in single-tasking.
  • Your attention span improves with single-tasking.

It’s Not Multitasking, but Serial Tasking?

According to Jim Taylor,  in Psychology Today, there is no such thing as multitasking. He renames this as “serial tasking” where you shift from one task and transfer to another in a rapid session.

It means that you’re doing one task quickly then switching to another task. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t do two things at the same time.

It’s possible to engage in two different tasks at the same time. This can happen as long as different parts of the brain execute different tasks. One good example is driving while listening to music.

Being More Productive with Single-tasking

With single-tasking, people immediately assume that you’re going to be slow. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be productive though. You can still tackle things one at a time and get your work done for the day.

Being frantic and moving from one task to another will not work for everyone. Sometimes it even does the opposite and causes one to be exhausted. Concentration plays a huge part in being successful at single-tasking. Once you’ve mastered it, you’ll find single-tasking an easy and fulfilling thing to do.

Which Is More Effective Between the Two?

The big question is, will you multitask or will you single-task? Both actually have their perks. You have to know which one works for you and stick to that format to get the work done.

Multitasking is better when you can combine cognitive tasks with noncognitive tasks. If you learn how to do this, then you can take advantage of multitasking.

If you are working on more than one cognitive task, then switch to single-tasking. This will give you more concentration to finish the work. Not only that, but it also keeps your mind free from stress.

Take things step by step and never push yourself to multitask when you know you can’t. Assess your situation and apply the best solution between the two.

The Oddities of Nature

Nature is full of surprises and oddities, ranging from the landscape of bubbling, strange animals, plants and any other feature of nature, including the human being some of which that seems to be too strange to exist; however, there are real, and they exist in nature. This paper seeks to highlight some of the oddities of life that are too strange to believe that they exist, yet they exist.

In spite the small size, the Brown Hornbill can protect itself from dangerous wild animals and birds using a simple strategy of crying hawk. Other birds on the hand use other strategies to warn fellow birds of the impending danger (Ash, p. 64). Hornbill can produce a signal that alerts several species, including the large pied currawong. Through this alarm, the hornbill can have its chicks escape within no minute. It is amazing that a hornbill can mimic several species of birds, some of which are bigger in a cunning way. Similarly, there is a Chinese village known as Houtou, located on Shengsi Island. This village has been abandoned for over 50 years. Currently, it has become a beautiful home, covered with the green and is one of the biggest tourist attraction areas in the area (Ash, p. 45).

Another oddity of nature is the harmless caterpillar that mimics dangerous snake heads in a bid to fool the predators. To escape being attacked by the predators, Dynasty Darius, in its pupil stage where the larvae change into a moth take the form of a dangerous snake to fool the predators (Ash, p. 37). In particular cases, D. Darius mimics the head of a Gaboon pit viper, where it has managed to fool even the toughest predators. Albinism, as we all know is mostly familiar with the human beings, but not wild community. This is because the bodies of the wild animals, including birds, do not produce melanin pigment cells. Albinistic creatures do not show pigmented features. Instead, they have white feathers or fur with the eye color which is usually pink of aberrant in color. On rare occasions, one meet two color anomalies of the same species. However, a woodpecker has been found in both melanistic and a leucistic variety of colors. Leucism produces the light color, and the melanin brings about the dark coloration in the eye which is absent in albinism.

Additionally, there is a particular species of plants found in Asia and South Pacific known as a telegraph. These plants have a credible ability to shake their leaves, rotate them in an axis and jerk them up and down even when there is no wind. Few plants have this ability to shake and turn their leaves.

The bombardier beetle releases boiling liquids from the body as a way of a defense mechanism.  This is mostly noticed when they are threatened by predators. They usually release the chemicals from the abdomen so quickly up to seventy times at a time. The discharge is a combination of the hydrogen peroxide and hydroquinones which mix in the stomach of the beetle to produce a chemical reaction (Behme, p. 76). The discharge is poisonous to the small animals and human beings.  On the other hand, some of the species of salmon show a complex and unusual migration. This type of movement allows them to hatch their eggs in streams where they spend the initial cycle of their life in the fresh water lakes and rivers. After growing to some inches, they migrate to the oceans where they adapt to the chemical environment of the salt water, where they spend yet another one year. In the process of their growth, they migrate for thousands of miles as they search for food. At the last phase of their life, they migrate from the ocean to the upriver and up streams where they started their life. They eventually die with their decaying bodies releasing nutrients to the newly laid eggs (Behme, P. 29). The produced eggs are then hatched to start a new life that follows the same unusual cycle.

There is a rock- like elephant in Italy which is a mass of trachyte stone that stands next to the State Road 134. It is believed that the rock was part of the Rocky complex of Monte Casteddazzu. However, the areas of the rock broke off and found its way to the valley next to the road.   In Argentina, close to the outskirt with Bolivia, the Hornocal mountain range is a sight that numerous portray as enthralled and unbelievable. There is a scope of superb hues and in some cases doesn’t look genuine,” picture taker Kevin Zaouali, who has caught dreamlike images of the ordinary ponder. What’s more, the mountain range’s remoteness adds to its quality of the puzzle. Relatively few sightseers visit the Hornocal Mountains because the tight, rock street that prompts to the territory is distant by transport (Bredekamp, p. 74).

Nature presents things in a funny and surprising ways that leave people wondering whether some of these things exist or not. There are a lot of oddities that have turned to be the tourist attraction in the localities where they are found.

Energy and Physics

My favorite academic subject is physics.  I took an interest in the subject at a young age and was fascinated to understand the texts and diagrams I saw in my elder brother’s physics textbook. When in high school physics was one of my favorite subjects, hence I placed extra efforts into my physics classes and the more I understood it, the more my determination and curiosity of being more knowledgeable of the subject grew. The fact that energy can be transformed into different kinds to perform various works intrigued me.  I, therefore, strived to put my best foot forward in all of my physics classes. My passion for physics enabled me to get a sponsorship from a top Energy company. The sponsorship has given me a sense of direction and focus to ensure that physics contributes to the betterment of the economy and aid in the creation of a healthier, better and prosperous nation.  To ensure that such goals are achieved I must subscribe to the best educational institution, so as to be more knowledgeable in this field and to ensure that my productivity contributes to a positive growth of our society.

Because of my interest in physics, I, therefore, choose to be an electrical engineer. This is because our lives today would be unthinkable without electrical energy.  It is a necessity for the growth of any society, be it agriculture wise or industrial wise. 24 hour economies have managed to be like so thanks to electricity that has enabled work to be executed during dark hours. Industrialization is still on the rise today and electricity is still required to light up dwellings, offices, shops or outdoor lighting for security purposes (Abu-Rub et al, 26-47). The fact that work has been made easier for man by the use of machines is undisputed since these electric-powered devices have taken care of heavy physical labor, especially in the construction sector. Transportation machines like trains also use electricity to hoist gears and lifts use electro motors to carry out their intended tasks. This has also posed an advantage over the previous internal combustion engines. Air-conditioning systems, food storage devices, television and broadcasting and communication systems just to name a few are among the vast sectors that have seen the importance of electrical energy.  I firmly believe that the field of electrical engineering is growing vastly as seen by the new technology that is mushrooming frequently and is full of opportunities that would make our lifestyles comfortable.

The Scientific Method

The scientific method refers to a process through which models are created and verified through an experiment. It involves the formulation of the hypothesis, making observations, development of models to serve as tools of communication. Further, the scientific method will employ and utilize inductive and deductive reasoning in an attempt to produce useful and reliable models of nature and natural phenomena (Kosso, 2011).

Distinction between Observation, Hypothesis, Experiment, and Model

A hypothesis is used to define a presupposed untested conclusion of a phenomena or concept subject to further analysis and testing that would either support it or prove otherwise. It is a foundation for research. Using the scenario a hypothesis is saying that the potted plants can be comfortably grown together.

An observation meanwhile refers to a noted occurrence in an experiment or subject matter of interest. Observed characteristics of bulbs may include their short stems and fleshy leaves. An experiment is an actual test that is conducted or run with the intention of making an observation that would then be used to confirm or disapprove a given hypothesis that has been proposed.  Given the assumption, an experiment would be conducted where an attempt to cultivate the bulbs and the potted plant can be made using one container (Carmichael, 2013).

A model refers in this context to a method of representing a scientific idea, object or phenomenon that may not be possible to be observed or experienced directly. It is a scientific tool of communicating and representation of ideas and concepts. A model, therefore, can be employed to demonstrate the relationship between the plants being grown and how they affect each other.
